ABOUT

ARTIST STATEMENT

With more than 25 years spent as a painter residing and working in the captivating landscapes of Cape Cod, my artistic journey has been dedicated to capturing the visual and historical essence of my surroundings. More recently, part-time residency in Mérida, Mexico has further broadened my palette and subjects, enriching my work with new sources of inspiration.

When I first started painting, I sought advice from a fellow artist I respected. His simple yet valuable guidance was to focus on the act of painting itself rather than trying to capture specific emotions. He believed that the emotions would naturally find their way into the artwork.

Taking this advice to heart, I started painting the scenes around me, especially the untamed beaches of Truro. I embraced the teachings and workshops of experienced artists connected to Cape Cod's artistic heritage, including Robert Henry, who learned from Hans Hofmann, and Fine Arts Work Center Fellows Jim Peters, Bert Yarborough, and Richard Baker. Through their guidance, I learned to play with materials and free myself from rigid representations. This led me to an expressive approach, where I let colors and compositions guide my creations, blending intellect and emotion.

The Bay Area Figurative Movement, led by painters David Park, Wayne Thiebaud, and Richard Diebenkorn, has also greatly influenced my artistic vision.

My preferred mediums are wax-based – encaustic or cold wax with oil – allowing me to layer colors, create transparency, and play with texture. I am continuously aiming to infuse the joy of creation into my work. My hope is that the layers in my artwork make for visually captivating surfaces, aw well as breathe life and emotion into the subjects, whether figures, structures, or boats, hinting at the mysteries within.

I am honored that my artistic journey has been acknowledged in Deborah Forman’s book, Contemporary Cape Cod Artists: Images of Land and Sea (Schiffer Publishing, 2013).

I have been a teaching-artist at the Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Museum School at PAAM.
